Belfast is where most of Northern Ireland's jobs are. It is the capital, the biggest city by a distance, and the place where the main banks, law firms, tech teams, hospitals and universities sit. If you are searching for work anywhere in NI, you will probably look at Belfast first.
This guide covers which sectors hire in the city, what a typical search looks like, how commuting works from the towns around it, and how to get in front of employers. Our live Belfast jobs page has the current vacancies; this post explains how to read them.
📍 A snapshot, not a promise: at the time of writing (23 October 2026) we list 189 live Belfast jobs. The biggest groups are Operations (50), Finance (32), Sales (31) and IT (28). Counts change every week, so check the page for today's numbers.
The Sectors That Hire in Belfast
- Finance and professional services. Belfast has a large financial services cluster, and several international banks run technology and operations teams here. Our current listings include a run of Citi technology and risk roles, plus accountancy and financial planning posts. See the finance sector and our guide to finance jobs in Belfast.
- Technology. Software, data, cyber and IT support roles sit across banks, scale-ups and consultancies. Start with the IT sector page and IT jobs in Belfast.
- Sales and customer-facing roles. Retail supervisors, sales assistants, telesales and area sales managers are advertised steadily. Browse the sales sector and read about sales jobs in Belfast.
- Operations, logistics and trades. This is our biggest group right now: shipping, delivery, warehouse, engineering and facilities roles with employers such as DHL and ASDA. See operations jobs and driving and warehouse jobs.
- Legal. Firms such as A&O Shearman hire in the city, and there are solicitor, paralegal and support roles. See the legal sector and legal jobs in Northern Ireland.
- Health, education and the public sector. The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Queen's University Belfast, Ulster University's Belfast campus and Belfast City Council are long-established employers. Their roles usually have fixed closing dates, so read how to apply for public sector jobs first.
- Retail and hospitality. The city centre, retail parks and the Cathedral Quarter generate steady shift-based work, including seasonal hiring. See retail jobs, hospitality jobs and Christmas jobs.
How the Belfast Market Works
Belfast has far more vacancies than anywhere else in NI, which means more competition for the good ones. A few things are worth knowing:
- Many roles come through agencies. A large share of listings are posted by recruiters on behalf of a client. The employer name may be hidden until you apply, so a role at "Reed" or "Manpower" is usually a client role.
- Senior finance and tech roles cluster here. If you want a vice president or lead engineer role, Belfast is where those teams are based.
- Entry-level work is easy to find. Entry-level roles and part-time jobs in Belfast turn up all year, and there are more still in the run-up to Christmas.
- Pay varies by sector. Where a listing shows a salary, that is the real figure. For wider context, see our salary guide and average salaries in Belfast. Ranges in those guides are indicative only.
Employers Worth Watching
Citi, A&O Shearman, DHL, ASDA, Superdrug and Bannatyne Group all have live Belfast roles on NIjobsearch at the time of writing, and the Trust, the universities and the council recruit regularly. Our guide to top companies hiring in Belfast goes into more detail.

Many people who work in Belfast live elsewhere. Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Bangor, Newtownards and Larne are all commuter bases, and the Belfast commuting zone stretches further than most people expect. Check train and bus times for your own route before you accept an offer, and ask about hybrid working: some employers allow part-remote working, and our guide to remote jobs in Northern Ireland explains how to check the small print.
If you want to work close to home, the surrounding County Antrim and County Down pages list roles outside the city boundary, and our County Antrim guide and County Down guide cover those areas.
How to Find and Win a Belfast Job
Search by sector, then by place. Start from the sector you want and filter to Belfast, rather than searching "jobs in Belfast", which returns everything.
Set up alerts. Good roles in a busy market move quickly. A daily job alert from the homepage means you see them while they are still open.
Tailor your CV. Keep it to two pages, lead with your most relevant experience and mention where you live, since commuting comes up early. See how to write a CV for Northern Ireland employers.
Read formal processes carefully. Trust, council and university roles are scored against stated criteria. Answer each one with a specific example.
