If you are weighing up a career move or a change of direction, one of the first questions is simple: which jobs in Northern Ireland actually pay well? The honest answer is that the top of the market is concentrated in a few places, mainly technology, law, finance, medicine and senior engineering, and that where you work matters almost as much as what you do.

This guide pulls together the highest-paying roles across NI using the indicative ranges in our own salary guide, and shows how to read them. For the wider picture by role and seniority, see average salaries in Belfast.

💷 Read this first: every figure below is an indicative gross annual salary for a full-time role, not an official statistic and not a promise. Pay depends on the employer, location, hours, experience and negotiation. Roles at the top of a range are usually at larger employers or in Belfast.

The Benchmark: What the Typical NI Worker Earns

Before the top end, it helps to know the middle. According to NISRA's Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, median gross full-time earnings in Northern Ireland were £37,100 a year in April 2025, about 5% below the UK median. Anything well above that figure counts as a high-paying role locally, and the roles below sit comfortably over it at mid-level or above.

Technology: The Highest-Paying Sector

Belfast has a large technology scene, and tech sits at or near the top of NI pay at every seniority level. Software, data, cloud and engineering leadership roles pay the most, and remote or hybrid roles with non-NI employers can pay more again.

RoleLevelIndicative range
Software Developer / EngineerSenior£55,000 – £75,000
Engineering / Tech LeadLead£65,000 – £95,000
Data Engineer / ScientistSenior£45,000 – £70,000

The ranges above come from our IT salary guide. Browse live vacancies on the IT sector or the software developer jobs page.

Law, Finance and Healthcare: Pay That Rises With Qualification

In these fields, pay is tied closely to professional qualification and years of experience. The biggest jumps come when you qualify, then again at senior or partner level.

RoleLevelIndicative range
CFO / Finance DirectorLead£80,000 – £130,000+
Financial ControllerSenior£55,000 – £80,000
Senior Solicitor / PartnerSenior£60,000 – £100,000+

GP / DoctorSenior£60,000 – £110,000+
PharmacistMid£40,000 – £55,000

Doctors and GPs have the widest ranges of all, with the top of the scale well above the other roles here. If you work in finance, the finance sector page is the place to start, and our guide to finance jobs in Belfast covers employers and how to apply. For law, see legal jobs in Northern Ireland.

Engineering, Sales and Leadership

Senior engineering and management roles pay well in NI, helped by the aerospace, manufacturing and life sciences base. In sales, the figures below are base salary only: many roles add commission or a bonus on top, so total earnings can be higher.

Belfast Versus the Rest of NI

Belfast generally pays more, especially in tech, finance and professional services, where global and GB-based employers with a city office tend to pay closer to GB rates. Outside the city, pay for the same role is often somewhat lower, though housing and commuting costs usually are too. Public sector roles, such as nursing, teaching and the Civil Service, follow set pay scales that apply across NI, so the location gap is smaller there. See our guide to public sector jobs in Northern Ireland for how those scales work.

How to Move Up the Pay Scale

Specialise. The gap between a junior and a senior role in the same field is often bigger than the gap between two different careers. Cloud, data, compliance and engineering management all sit at the upper end of their sectors.

Get qualified. ACA, ACCA and CIMA in finance, qualified solicitor status in law and professional registration in healthcare all unlock the next pay band.

Look at who is paying. The same role can pay noticeably more at a larger or international employer than at a small local one. Check the salary on the live listing, because where an employer states one, that is the real figure.

Weigh up the whole package. Pension, holiday, hybrid working and the commute all affect what a job is really worth. A slightly lower salary closer to home, for example in Lisburn or Coleraine, can leave you better off than a longer drive to Belfast.

Get your CV right. Employers pay for evidence of impact, so put numbers and outcomes up front. Our guide to writing a CV for Northern Ireland employers explains what NI employers look for.
