Radiographers carry out imaging procedures such as X-rays, CT and MRI scans, and are a protected-title profession. Vacancies in Northern Ireland are advertised by the HSC trusts and by healthcare recruitment agencies, and the same few search terms recur: "radiographer jobs Northern Ireland" and "radiography jobs". Current listings sit under our healthcare sector page and healthcare jobs in Belfast.
HSC pay for radiographers
Newly qualified radiographers are generally appointed at Band 5 of the Agenda for Change structure. From the HSC Northern Ireland pay bands page (basic pay, updated April 2025):
| Band | Entry | After 2 years | After a further 2 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band 5 | £31,049 | £33,487 | £37,796 |
| Band 6 | £38,682 | £40,823 (after 2 yrs) | £46,580 (after a further 3 yrs) |
| Band 7 | £47,810 | £50,273 (after 2 yrs) | £54,710 (after a further 3 yrs) |
Specialist, senior and advanced posts sit at Band 6 and above. Weekend, evening and night work attracts enhancements, from time and a third up to double time, on top of basic pay. Rates are revised each year, so check HSC for the current table. For context, the median full-time salary in Northern Ireland was £38,200 in 2026 (see our average salary guide).
Registration and qualifications
- Radiographers must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to use the title and practise.
- Registration normally follows an HCPC-approved pre-registration degree in diagnostic radiography.
- Employers ask for current HCPC registration on the advert, plus AccessNI and occupational health clearance.
Agency and locum radiography roles
Agencies list locum and contract radiographer posts, which are paid to the agency's rate rather than a band. Compare the rate and the length of contract, and ask who covers travel. Roles outside Northern Ireland sometimes appear in broad searches, so check the location before applying.
Applying
List your modalities (general X-ray, CT, MRI, theatre), your HCPC number, and any out-of-hours experience. Our guide to writing a CV for NI employers and the interview questions guide help with the rest. See the healthcare salary guide for other roles, and set a job alert on NIjobsearch so new radiography posts reach your inbox.
